Christchurch Casino Employees Option: To Leave Or To Stay?

The casino management of Christchurch had decided to extend the deadline to give their employees more time whether to stay or leave their jobs from April 5 to April 11 after the meeting done with the Service and Food Workers Union representatives.

Workers have given more time to consider if they wish to continue or end their job until Monday. Those who will not contact the company on Monday at 5 pm will supposed to have left their jobs. They will be paid out a four-weeks-notice-payment along with the annual leave entitlements.

In a report, the Industry Representative, Len Richards, said that the union requested for the extension to give workers longer time to consider on what option to choose.

Quoted from the national news of the website: http://tvnz.co.nz:

Richards stated: “We’ve been told that the casino may be operating sooner than previously expected. However, the workers still face weeks, if not months, of uncertainty about their income and could well be forced to live on the unemployment benefit for a lengthy period.”

Richards also said that the workers on the casino company will be covered with wages until April 5, (supposedly the last day of workers who decide to leave), which got from the business-interruption insurance.

With this being the case workers who choose to stay will still be paid their holiday pay. This pay will be of either a weekly amount or a lump sum where they will remain employees on leave without pay.

On the other hand, the co – owner of the Christchurch Casino, which is the SkyCity, have projected to create a profit of $130 million plus this year.

According to a report, the casino company will be given a $1.5 million government subsidy that is available for quake affected businesses, although they would not rely into it due to private insurance.

According to Richards, the union had already contacted the earthquake recovery minister, Gerry Brownlee to request for support to pay workers who remain on the company.

On Friday, casino workers will be having a meeting to discuss about the genuine redundancy compensation of the workers who choose to leave and fully paid those who’ll remain.
