World Series of Poker 2011 Gets Underway

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Today the 42nd WSOP gets underway at the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This world renowned tournament series will now run for a month and a half between May 31st and July 19th and award a record 58 gold bracelets, culminating in the $10k Main Event on July 7th.

New events to look out for at WSOP 2011 include the $25k NLHE Heads Up Championship, as well as the $2.5k six-handed 10-game mixed event and the $5k six-handed PLO event.

There have also been a number of other changes to this year’s WSOP. These include an unprecedented amount of television coverage, as well as for the first time the ESPN network or WSOP.com recording every final table.

In addition, this year the player’s comfort will be more closely addressed than ever by limiting the amount of play per day to a maximum of 10 levels.

On the competitors front, one of the top pro to take note of at WSOP 2011 is record bracelet holder Phil Hellmuth currently on 11 bracelets and hoping to pull further away from nearest rivals Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson both on 10.

Eight times winner Phil Ivey will also prove a formidable force at the competition, no doubt boosted by the extra incentive of millions of dollars in prop bets with fellow pros. In 2010, for instance, Ivey and Howard Lederer made the biggest known prop bet in poker history after a bet was made for $5 million that Ivey couldn’t win 2 WSOP bracelets over a two year period.

However, Ivey did manage to capture a bracelet last year at the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. and one more title over the next few weeks will see him collect the enormous sum from fellow Full Tilt pro Lederer.

At the time of the wager, Lederer known as the “Poker Professor” had assumed WSOP fields would continue growing over the next few years thus making Ivey’s task harder. However, in the wake of Black Friday it is now expected the fields will drop off somewhat although estimates vary greatly by how much.

As the WSOP 2011 gets underway today, here at Onlinepoker we will endeavour to keep you updated with all the main news coming from Las Vegas as it occurs.

Final Set For World Poker Tour World Championship

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

One of poker’s toughest final tables usually emerges annually at the World Poker Tour World Championship.

This year’s $25,000 buy-in tournament at the Bellagio lives up to that reputation. The six players who emerged after six days of action Thursday evening have combined live tournament earnings of more than $10 million.

Two recent standouts, Galen Hall and Scott Seiver, will virtually share the chip lead when play starts again at 4 Friday afternoon at the Fontana Lounge. The first-place prize is worth $1.6 million.

“This is my first WPT final table,” Seiver told the World Poker Tour site after play Wednesday. “I’m extremely excited for it. Hopefully, I can make it memorable and win it.”

Hall has a stack of 5.09 million chips, while Seiver has amassed 5.07 million. The difference between the two works out to five antes on the current level of play.

Seiver, a 26-year old who lives in Las Vegas, won a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2008 and is known to crush local cash games. He has around $2.3 million in career tournament earnings, which is about $100,000 less than Hall.

The 24-year old Hall burst onto the scene earlier this year by winning one of the most notable tournaments on the circuit, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas, for $2.3 million.

“I just made two final tables in Madrid, too, but didn’t close either,” Hall told the WPT site Tuesday. “So, I’ve got some wood to knock on for this one.”

Two other notables who advanced to the televised final table are Las Vegas pro Justin Young and Freddy Bonyadi, who resides in Los Angeles. Bonyadi owns three World Series of Poker bracelets with the most recent coming in 2005. Young is also around the $2.3 million mark in career earnings, but a major tournament win has eluded him to this point.

It was originally expected to take an extra day to play down to six players. A few rounds were supposed to take place Thursday, but that became unnecessary when the starting field of 225 trimmed faster than anticipated.

“On one hand, I like it because I’m exhausted,” Seiver said. “I’m tired and the day off I’m sure will help me recuperate. But thinking about it, I feel everyone else has to be tired and exhausted, too, and I might be able to do better on less energy or thought than them. So the day off might help them more than me.”

WPT Championship Leaders: Sternberg and Kelly

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Top Respective Pro Poker Players Alan Sternberg and Steven Kelly. This two man started at the Bellagio in the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship and the two biggest stacks for its Alan Sternberg (875,000) and Steven Kelly (860,000).

Way back in March, Sternberg and Kelly went heads up for WPT Bay 101 title, with Sternberg coming out on top for more than $1 million.

According to Sternberg ” I have a ton of respect for Steven’s game during a break here at the $25,000 WPT event. “He is impossible to play against. He just doesn’t stop raising, ever. I think he got pretty card dead when I beat him heads up in March. That was the only time in the 12 hours I played with him when he wasn’t raising every single hand.” Kelly had Phil Hellmuth on his immediate left, before he busted shortly into level 14, and had given the 11-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner two walks during the day. “I never thought I would give those to Hellmuth, considering how tight he plays, especially with a short stack. Overall, he had respected my raises.”

Kelly said that he hasn’t gone to showdown too much on day 3, and won’t say what he had in the pots that helped give him a mountain of chips. “I haven’t had to show a lot of my big hands, which is always good for a table image.”A few tables over, Kelly’s former final table foe is also amassing a stack to make a run for another WPT final table. Sternberg got most of his chips thanks to flopping a set in a three-bet pot early in the day, and recently eliminated Phil Laak. Laak hit the rail after shoving for about 15 big blinds over a Sternberg cut-off raise. Sternberg tanked for a while before calling with A-3, and ended up being way ahead of Laak’s 5-2 off suited. “I had seen him squeeze all in for 30 big blinds earlier in the day with 10-8 off suit, so I am never going to fold A-3 there,” Sternberg said. Despite having the top stack in the room and admitting that there were a few soft spots at his table that he could take advantage of, Sternberg, like Kelly, said he was generally staying out of the way of tricky situations and gradually chipping up.
